Leducate Explains: Human Rights in 2020

Ahead of human rights day on the 10th December 2020 we are looking for a volunteer to write an article in relation to the theme ‘standing up for human rights’. We would like to have a look at human rights in the perspective of this year.

Some ideas of what to include:

  • What are human rights? What role do they play?

  • Why are human rights important?

Human Rights and Discrimination:

  • Look at Article 14 and what it means

  • Perhaps link to protests around the world re: discrimination and how that fits in with article 14.

COVID:

  • This is speculative at the moment as people do not know the ramifications currently. However, you can look at a few situations where the law and COVID regulations may have clashed and explain why it could be a problem.

  • Some examples that we could think of:

    • Article 6 ‘right to fair trial’ - Can remote hearings be descried as fair and held within a reasonable time?

    • Article 7 - ‘no punishment without law’ - interesting trials and convictions e.g. Londener convicted of criminal Covid19 offence in London for usinga Welsh regulation.

    • Article 8 - ‘right to family life’ - has this been denied?

    • Article 9 - the banning of religious services? Has this been applied fairly e..g Eid, Diwali and Christmas

    • Article 11 ‘freedom of assembly’ - vs lockdown?

    • The balance governments around the world have tried to achieve through article 2 - the right to life and others such as protocol 1, article 2 - the right to education.

Conclusion:

  • Why human rights are important to those most vulnerable when you most need them.

The above are guides surrounding the areas we think will fit well with this year’s theme and the events of the year. If you have other ideas, please feel free to include them.

The article should be 500 - 750 words and should be an accessible explanation of the issue, in simple terms for to engage 16-18-year-olds without a legal background.

NOTE: We have found that it is essential for articles of this kind to be written with limited legal terms, and to be clearly defined when they are used, to make them as accessible as possible. We would ask, therefore, to limit complex legal jargon to ensure that the article is easily digestible by the targeted audience.

Remember - The law can be scary, at Leducate we hope to make it as accessible as possible!

Be sure to let us know if you are interested in writing this article below.
