Leducate Explains: Homosexuality laws

In this article, we would like to look at laws on homosexuality and the recent extension of pardoning for historical crimes.

Some ideas of what to include:

  • What were the laws on homosexuality historically?

  • What is the Alan Turing Law and what does it cover?

  • What is the recent extension of pardoning for historical criminal convictions relating to homosexual activity?

  • Why was there a need for this, i.e. what did the Alan Turing Law not do?

  • Recent history of homosexual crimes

    • i.e. it was an offence to be homosexual in the armed forces until 2000

The above are guides of what we think will fit well in the article but are not prescriptive. We are looking for readers to understand a brief history of homosexuality laws in the UK and the changes that have been affected in the last 50 years and their impact.

The article should be ~750 (MAX: 1000) words and should be an accessible explanation of the issue, in simple terms for to engage 16-18-year-olds without a legal background.

NOTE: We have found that it is essential for articles of this kind to be written with limited legal terms, and to be clearly defined when they are used, to make them as accessible as possible. We would ask, therefore, to limit complex legal jargon to ensure that the article is easily digestible by the targeted audience. If you do need to use any legal terms, please include a glossary at the end of your article with definitions of the words.

If you find pictures you’d like to use you may include these in your article, however, please include the source/link to the photo so we can ensure we are able to use it and reference it.

Remember - The law can be scary, at Leducate we hope to make it as accessible as possible!
