Leducate Explains: Discrimination Piece

An article no longer than 1000 words, ideally between 500-750 count, as part of the Leducate Explains series. This is a collection of articles that seek to clearly explain legal principles or terms to the reader level of 16-18-year-olds with no legal knowledge. The information may be relevant to an older age group, but the writing level should keep our target audience in mind.

We have a 'definitions' box for complex legal terms so if there are any you need to include in the article make a note of them and we'll add these as definitions. If you can avoid using complex terms that would be preferable.

The article should focus on the law on racial discrimination, specifically:

  • The discrimination framework in the UK relating to race, including an explanation of direct/indirect discrimination (brief examples are likely to be useful)

  • Who is bound by the prohibition on discrimination, including employers and education

  • How could this framework apply to the current debate on racial inequality? A couple of relevant examples (these can be taken from recent UK events) showing how it might be used by people who have been disadvantaged, and perhaps an example of its limitations.

Reference can be made to George Floyd and the recent UK discussions as context but remain within the boundaries of discrimination law.

Note that we are also producing separate articles on protest laws and other issues linked to the current debates around systemic racism, so this article should be kept within the brief.
