Leducate Explains: American Law
With the American Election, we are looking for a volunteer to draft an article about the differences between electing lawmakers in the UK as compared to the US.
Some ideas of what to include:
Differences and Similarities to English System setup?
Federal system vs Westminister Parliament
American States vs Devolved Parliaments
Bicameral - Senate & House of Representatives vs Commons & Lords
Differences in power between the President and the Prime Minister
e.g. do they both have the same level of power?
How does voting work?
How does the collegiate system work for voting for presidents?
Do voters get other options, i.e. for senators? vs unelected House of Lords
When does the elected party move into power? Is this different from the UK?
It is important to bear in mind that we want our readers to come away with a good idea about how the American System works. We have articles on UK laws, so you do not need to go into too much depth re: UK law, just use it as a comparative device.
The article should be 500 - 750 words and should be an accessible explanation of the issue, in simple terms for to engage 16-18-year-olds without a legal background.
NOTE: We have found that it is essential for articles of this kind to be written with limited legal terms, and to be clearly defined when they are used, to make them as accessible as possible. We would ask, therefore, to limit complex legal jargon to ensure that the article is easily digestible by the targeted audience.
Remember - The law can be scary, at Leducate we hope to make it as accessible as possible!
