Debt Awareness Week

On 23rd March, Leducate is supporting Debt Awareness Week, run by StepChange.

Debt Awareness Week aims to open up the conversation around debt and encourage those who need help to seek it out. Leducate’s work goes hand in hand with the week’s theme for this year to ‘change your debt story’. Our core curriculum has included teaching young people about the legal ramifications of taking on debt and how to manage them, which we believe is more important than ever in the current economic climate.

Leducate’s ‘Contractual Rights’ module enables students to understand the practical application of contractual principles in the context of debt. Whilst debt is one of the most common ways of managing money in our society, it can be a daunting concept and may have severe consequences if mismanaged. Our lessons explore debt as a contractual relationship and as part of wider positive money management.

Our goal is to enable students to understand how daily activities, like buying everyday items with a credit card or taking out student finance, are all interconnected with contract law. We explore the difference between debt and arrears, interest, and how to get out of bad debt and make educated choices about their money.

By educating young people about debt, Leducate is giving them the skills to make positive money management decisions. We believe that empowering young people with knowledge of their legal rights and contractual obligations now, can help them make smarter decisions in the future.
